Whitman release fifth edition of 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins
Whitman Publishing has announced the release of the fifth edition of 100 Greatest United States Modern Coins, a comprehensive guide by award-winning numismatists Scott Schechter and Jeff Garrett.
This latest edition, described by Whitman as a “modern makeover,” expands on previous versions with updated values, market trends, and new discoveries in U.S. coinage minted from 1964 to the present day.
“This edition captures the artistry, ingenuity, and cultural significance of modern U.S. coinage,” said John Feigenbaum, CEO of Whitman Publishing. “Whether you’re a seasoned collector or new to the hobby, 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins is an essential addition to your library.”
The book features iconic coins such as the 1975 No S Roosevelt Dime Proof, ranked #1, and the 1969-S Doubled Die Lincoln Cent, ranked #2. Other highlights include the 2000 Sacagawea Dollar/Washington Quarter Mule and the American Silver Eagle series. For the first time, it incorporates Greysheet®-based pricing and GSIDSM numbers, offering collectors precise valuation and cross-referencing tools.
“Collectors will find a fresh perspective in this edition,” said co-author Scott Schechter. “We’ve included new entries and revised rankings to reflect evolving market trends and U.S. Mint innovations. It’s a book that demonstrates why the modern era is the most dynamic in numismatics.”
The top ten coins include:
- 1975 No S Roosevelt Dime Proof
- 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse Lincoln Cent
- 1976 No S Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar Proof

Whitman emphasized the book’s comprehensive updates: ten new coins were added, nine dropped off the list, and significant shifts in rankings reflect market activity. “Fewer than one-fourth of all coins retained their rank,” Schechter noted.
The fifth edition of 100 Greatest U.S. Modern Coins is available in Canada at CoinStampSupplies.com. “This isn’t just a price guide; it’s a journey through a hundred unique points in modern American history,” Feigenbaum said. “Schechter and Garrett have truly outdone themselves.”
